Lesson overview

Woo… hoo… it’s time to pick up your didgeridoo. In this lesson, Sanshi will teach you how to produce a good squeezing sound on a didge by loosening your lips.

Lesson goals

  • Be able to do step 3 with your lips on the mouthpiece of your didgeridoo
  • Be able to compare the sound of a tight lips squeeze with a loosen lips squeeze.
  • Be able to produce a drone didgeridoo sound by loosening your squeeze.

Training tips

  • Don’t squeeze out with your mouth too tight as this will create more vibration and will not make a very good sound on your didgeridoo.
  • Try to loosen more and more until you come up with a drone sound.
  • If you are having trouble, go back to the last lesson to get comfortable, then repeat this lesson
  • Try to resist going to the next step until you find this step easy
  • Practice this 1000 times :), you are so close now

    Hey Sanshi,
I have got up to loosening the lips as part of lesson 5 but when I come to using this technique through my didgeridoo I am hitting a big brick wall! I am concerned that the size of my mouthpiece may have something to do with this. With the didg that you are using, what size is the mouthpiece and do you have any advice for me since I can’t move forward until I can do this stage? I can’t seem to push the air out of my cheeks and vibrate the lips when I try. HELP!

    1. Sanshi Didgeridoo says:

Hi My mouthpiece is 32mm, 30mm is average size! Try 30!
When you squeeze your cheeks, if you are having trouble letting air out too fast, try tighten your lips just little bit, so you will get the “Grip”. If its too loose you will lose the air in your cheeks too quick and not enough time to connect! Is your both cheeks full of air? expand the squeeze by dropping your jaw so gain the squeeze time longer!

  3. Matthew Lawlor says:

hey i cant make the drone sound with loose lips, the air just escaepes with no noise made? its either very tight sound or no sound…
    any help with that :/

    1. Sanshi Didgeridoo says:

Hi Matthew, no worries, the drone sound is made by correct vibration speed for each key/didge, to find out the drone correctly, gradually relaxing your lips from tight sound very slowly, then when the vibration matches the speed for your didge, it will resonates!

Is there enough room on your mouthpiece? Fiddle around the mouthpiece size, usually 30mm diameter.
Also check if any crack or hole on your didge which will lose the pressure!

I hope this helps, if you need more support, pls contact [email protected] I can take a look your video etc!
