NOTE:The first half of this lesson series is available completely free of charge. You can purchase the full set by hitting the Buy button below or by purchasing a full membership.
Lesson overview
In this lesson, we will show you how to smoothly connect a drone to a squeeze without breaking the sound.
Lesson goals
- Be able to go from drone to breath with no gap in the sound
- Be able to go comfortably produce a drone sound by loosen squeeze.
Training tips
- You don’t need to worry about the quality of the sound. To get the didgeridoo to sound good is the easy part to do at the end. Put all your focus into getting a continuous “noise”
- Any “noises” will become a nice sounding drone as you relax and get more comfortable with full the circular breathing technique
- Remember, it doesn’t need to be rushed or fast. You can do the circular breathing technique nice and slow
- Practice this another 1000 times :). This is it, you are circular breathing!

I have the rhythm down and have eliminated the front and end gaps, but I still don’t understand how to make the drone sound using only the air in my cheeks. I either get the spitting sound, or, if I loosen my lips, all the air just rushes out all at once.
Please help!
Instead of trying to make the drone sound while circular breathing, try making the sound with just the air in your cheeks. If you get a spitting sound your lips are too tight, if the air rushes out too fast your lips are too loose. You have to try and find the sweet spot, but try making the drone sound without circular breathing, that’s how I figured it out.
Hope that helps.
Nice advice Brian!
Hi Mark, well done for connecting the sound! more than 80% done i think!
So the drone sound with your cheek squeeze should be between spitting sound and loose lips, when you squeeze you want to feel pressured air against your cheek but without spitting sound. so i suggest loosen your lips little bit by little bit until sound is right.
It might take time to get used to but at the end you will circular breath!!! Happy Didgin’!
Got it! I’m a didgeridoo master now!
Nice job Mark!
I can breath in whilst blowing out through tight lips.
I am trying to do the drone and then tight lips to take breath in, sounds awful, but getting there.
But I have no idea how to fill out my cheeks like Sanshi does it
Hi Aurora!
Good job! The hardest part has gone and you are more than half way!
The next step will be loosen your lips to get the drone sound, but the air flow is gonna be a lot faster! The breathing part is only 0.5sec, so work with timing! The follow up circular breathing lesson videos are teaching you this.
How to fill your cheeks, you should start preparing it before the breathing in, biigger cheeks are the better, so expand your cheeks full and keep the nice sound as well! So just before breathing in, when your lungs are still half full.
I hope this info helps!
Thanks for that, but I just can’t seem to make my cheeks blow out whilst also breathing out.
It is probably a real easy thing to do, but I just can’t seem to do it.
I suppose previously playing saxophone doesn’t help as it is considered bad form to have full blown cheeks whilst playing the sax, lol.
Yeah it comes slowly, the main thing is relaxing your cheeks, it may change the lip shapes so adjust the air pressure if sounds stops!
Practice!!
